About John

Originally from England and now based outside New Orleans, John West is a songwriter working at the intersection of contemporary indie-folk, storytelling and ideas.

West writes less about what happened than about what it meant. Personal experience often provides the spark, but his songs move outward from autobiography into stories, characters and larger questions — exploring love, identity, mortality, consciousness, freedom, belonging and the contradictions of being human.

His writing draws on the narrative tradition of folk music while embracing the intimacy and atmospheric possibilities of contemporary indie-folk. A life lived on both sides of the Atlantic adds another perspective: not allegiance to a particular musical geography, but an interest in the things that remain recognizably human wherever we happen to find ourselves.

Sometimes deeply personal, sometimes imagined and sometimes philosophical, the songs share a common instinct: to look beneath an experience rather than simply describe it.

A song can tell a story and still ask a question.
